Obituary for Carel Steele

Carel, the second-oldest of the nine children of James and Dorothy Mailer, was born Marjorie Ada on December 6, 1917, in a log house near Clandonald, north of Vermilion, Alberta. In spite of the hard times, Marjorie had a happy childhood. After high school, Marjorie and her older sister Janet attended the Vermilion School of Agriculture, class of 1937 to 1939. On November 5, 1941, Marjorie married Stanley Steele of Cadogan, Alberta; they had four children: Kathie, Norris, Treva, and Marke. In 1954, they changed their names to Carel and Scot. Carel was the totally involved and supportive woman behind her successful husband as he owned and drove school buses, sold and delivered fuel to farmers, was an automobile and farm implement dealer, and farmed. Carel was never idle; in fact, she and daughter Kathie had had a "date" to make relish on the very day of the fatal stroke. If Carel wasn't cooking, baking, canning, sewing, or quilting, she might be volunteering with the Edgerton Museum, enjoying her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, playing Scrabble, solving a Word Jumble or sudoku puzzle, or reading. Besides her three generations of offspring, a highlight of Carel's life was her membership in Eastern Star. Carel leaves behind her husband, Scot, her children, Kathie (Cliff) Brown, Treva (John) Olson, and Marke (Doni), her ten grandchildren Tia (Todd) Macmillan, Kari (Kori) Muir, Liza Steele, Tod Steele; Marsha (Tom) Clarke, Tyson Brown; Jassen (Lori) Steele, Darek (Pam Morey) Steele; Emerson (Kristen Lis) North, Elise (Jon) Koehli, her nine great-grandchildren, Kate and Sara (Macmillan), Bridgit, Brynn, and Bryley (Muir), Kailyn and Kirby (Jassen's), Clover and Tyce (Liza's), her brother, Bryce (Verna), and many nieces and nephews.
